The Move

Stop optimizing your resume for a system that no longer exists.

For years the advice was simple: match the keywords, mirror the job description, beat the ATS. That advice is 3 to 5 years old, and the systems it was written for are gone.

Generative AI now reads your resume the way a recruiter reads a story. It looks for coherence, progression, and impact, not just term matches. A resume built entirely around keyword density reads as flat to these systems, and flat gets passed over even when the person behind it is exactly right for the role.

If you have been doing everything the old playbook told you to do and still hearing nothing back, this is why. The move this week is to stop asking “did I use the right words” and start asking “does this read like a real career, told well.”

From the Field

A senior candidate came to me convinced her resume was the problem. She had rewritten it four times, each version denser with keywords than the last. Interviews were not coming.

We stripped it back and rebuilt it around a throughline: what she was actually responsible for, what changed because she was in the room, and how that responsibility grew year over year. No new keywords. No new jobs. Just a story instead of a list.

She had three interviews scheduled within three weeks.

The lesson was not that her resume was bad. It was that her resume was unreadable to a system built to find a narrative, not a checklist.

The Question

If a recruiter or an AI system read your resume today with no other context, would it tell them a coherent story about who you are as a professional, or would it read as a series of disconnected duties?

Sit with that one before you touch your resume again.

What’s On

I’m running a free 30-minute session this Thursday, August 27, called Resume Mythbusting: Why Qualified People Get Passed Over on Paper. I’ll walk through exactly what changed in how these systems read resumes, the one-trick pony problem with AI-written resumes, and what actually gets you to the top of the stack when 500 people applied to the same role.

If you are applying and hearing nothing back, this session is built for you.
