If your search was moving in the spring and went quiet by June, you are not imagining it. Something did change. It just was not the market.
I see this pattern every year around this time. A search picks up momentum in the first half of the year, slows down over the summer, and then the person assumes the slowdown means something is wrong with them, their background, or the job market itself. Usually none of those are true. What changed is the strategy stopped matching the moment.
After twenty years in recruiting and years of building the Career Agility System, I see the same three breakdowns behind almost every stalled search. Here is where they usually show up.
Breakdown one: the resume reads accurate but not senior. Many strong resumes list responsibilities instead of outcomes. That worked when a human was the first reader. It doesn’t work now that AI-powered ATS systems scan for scope, impact, and seniority signals before a person ever sees the document. Especially during a season where recruiters have a huge volume of requisitions to fill in a short amount of time. More leaning into the ATS scoring.
Breakdown two: the search relies on applying, not being findable. The hidden job market accounts for a significant share of placements, often cited around 60 percent filled through referral or network, 20 percent through direct outreach, and only the remaining 20 percent through posted applications. If applying online is the entire strategy, the search is competing for the smallest slice of available roles.
Breakdown three: LinkedIn is a placeholder instead of a positioning tool. Many profiles are current but static, listing title and company without giving a recruiter a reason to reach out first.
Naming the problem is the easy part. The fix looks different depending on which of these three is actually holding your search back, and that is exactly what I am walking through, breakdown by breakdown, on September 3.
I am also sharing where my clients are finding traction right now heading into Q4, and I will be opening enrollment for the fall Career Momentum Program cohort during the session, with early bird pricing for attendees.
