This week, I asked a simple question:
Which statement best describes how you feel about your career right now?
And the results were telling.
More than 85% of respondents said they were:
• feeling stuck
• unsure what comes next
• or working hard without advancing
Only a small minority said they were growing intentionally.
That should concern all of us.
Because in today’s workforce, drifting is becoming dangerous.
The Old Career Model Is Breaking
For years, many professionals believed:
“If I work hard, opportunities will come.”
And for a while, that worked.
But today’s market moves differently.
AI is reshaping roles.
Organizations are flatter.
Visibility matters more.
And career paths are no longer linear.
Which means:
Effort alone is no longer enough.
Why So Many Professionals Feel Stuck
What I see repeatedly is not a lack of talent.
It’s a lack of intentional strategy.
Most professionals are:
• reacting instead of planning
• waiting instead of positioning
• staying busy instead of building visibility
They’re operating inside their current role…
instead of managing their long-term trajectory.
The Hidden Trap of Being “Good at Your Job”
Ironically, high performers are often the most vulnerable.
Why?
Because they become indispensable operationally…
while remaining invisible strategically.
They assume:
“My work speaks for itself.”
But in today’s environment:
visibility, communication, adaptability, and positioning matter just as much as performance.
What the Minority Is Doing Differently
The professionals growing intentionally are not necessarily smarter or more talented.
But they are more deliberate.
They:
• continuously evaluate where the market is going
• invest in skills before they’re required
• communicate their value clearly
• build visibility consistently
• nurture strategic relationships
• position themselves for future opportunities before they need them
Most importantly:
They treat career growth as something they own, not something they wait for.
How to Take Back Control
Intentional growth starts with three shifts:
1️⃣ Stop Waiting for External Validation
Your manager, company, or industry may not create the roadmap you want.
You must become proactive about your future.
2️⃣ Build Visibility Alongside Competence
Being capable matters.
But people also need to:
• know your value
• understand your strengths
• associate you with impact
Invisible talent gets overlooked.
3️⃣ Think Beyond Your Current Role
Too many professionals optimize for their current jobs rather than their future opportunities.
Ask yourself:
• What direction is my industry moving?
• What skills will matter next?
• What do I want to become known for?
That’s how intentional careers are built.
The Bottom Line
The professionals who thrive over the next decade will not be the ones who simply work the hardest.
They’ll be the ones who:
• adapt intentionally
• position themselves strategically
• communicate their value clearly
• and take ownership of their trajectory
Want Help Building That Roadmap?
This is exactly what I’ll be covering in my upcoming webinar on career ownership, visibility, and future-proofing your career in today’s evolving workforce.
Because your future career cannot be built passively.
It must be built intentionally.
