If you’ve sent fifty resumes and heard back from three companies, you already know something is broken. It’s not your background. It’s your career visibility.

Career visibility is whether recruiters and hiring managers can actually find you, understand what you do, and recognize you as the answer to a problem they have. You can have twenty years of strong results and still be invisible if your resume and LinkedIn aren’t built to be found.

Here’s what’s actually happening in the market

Layoffs have accelerated sharply this year. Challenger, Gray & Christmas reports the tech industry alone cut over 123,000 jobs through May, with AI now the most cited reason, responsible for an estimated 87,714 losses year-to-date. Meta cut about 8,000 jobs in May. Cisco cut nearly 4,000 the same month, despite reporting better-than-expected profit.

Once you’re out of a role, the average search now runs close to six months. Tech and media searches often run longer. Volume doesn’t fix this either: the typical job seeker submits 80 to 150 applications to land one offer, and untargeted applications convert far worse than focused ones.

The part most people miss

A large share of hiring never touches the applicant pool at all. Recruiters increasingly source candidates directly through LinkedIn, searching for people who match specific criteria, often before a role is posted publicly. If your profile doesn’t rank in that search, you’re invisible to the person hiring, no matter how strong your background is.

Activity matters too. Professionals who’ve updated their profile or engaged with content in the past 30 days respond to recruiter outreach at roughly four times the rate of dormant profiles. And 72% of recruiters now use LinkedIn as part of their hiring process, rating LinkedIn-sourced hires as higher quality than candidates found elsewhere.

How to fix it

The professionals landing offers right now aren’t always the most qualified people in the pile. They’re the ones who show up clearly, consistently, and in the places recruiters are actually looking.
