I love it when I have a coaching session with a big aha moment that gets me verklempt. That happened recently with a client who has been questioning his leadership abilities. He was questioning them because he led differently from other leaders in his organization. He lost his confidence.
When we stepped back and discussed different leadership styles, he realized he did not need to conform. Instead, he needed to hone in on what makes him a great leader, continue to serve from his head and heart, and understand where he needs to tweak delivery.
Being a leader does not mean you need to be a “yes” man or woman, nor be confrontational when you disagree. It means bringing your voice and influence to rally the troops or share another perspective in decision-making.
Leadership is something all leaders can continue to improve on over time. However, the first step in becoming a better leader is understanding what kind of leader you are and honing in on your strengths.
To develop your authentic style of leadership, focus on the following key strategies:
Self-Awareness
Developing self-awareness is crucial for authentic leadership. Engage in deep introspection to understand your strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and core values. Practice self-reflection through journaling, seeking mentor feedback, and investing in personal development. Consider taking an assessment like StrengthsFinder or DiSC to help you hone in on your abilities. This self-awareness will help you align your actions with your values and develop a consistent leadership style.
Identify Your Values
Determine your values and ethical code and commit to consistently practicing them35. Authentic leaders are driven by personal convictions rather than status or personal benefits. Ensure that your actions and decisions align with your core values to build trust and respect among your team members.
Transparency and Authenticity
Be transparent in your communication and decision-making processes. Share your thoughts and feelings honestly, and admit when you’re wrong. This openness fosters trust and encourages team members to be more transparent.
Build Meaningful Relationships
Establish long-term, meaningful relationships with your team members. Focus on creating genuine connections by inspiring trust and fostering a positive work environment. Show that you value each employee’s opinion and are willing to listen.
Lead by Example
Demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes you expect from your team. Complete tasks you want your team to accomplish and follow through on your commitments. This approach helps build trust and respect while encouraging others to emulate your leadership style.
By incorporating these strategies into your leadership approach, you can develop an authentic leadership style that is true to your values and inspires your team to succeed.
