The New Midlife Crisis Amid a Crisis: Career Pivots

now or never quote

1%

Brian Bosché has a “7 to 1” principle he shares in his work on purpose – 7 months is 1% of our productive lives.  1% of the time we have to earn a salary.  Build a business.  Give back.  Be great.

1% has now come and gone since COVID quarantines, hibernations, lockdowns started.

I started Impact OceansTM four years ago.  Back then it was a shell of a company, a seed till I figured out exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up – i.e. retired.  It became the side hustle or the holder of the “in between” gigs I’d take on as I revolved in and out of different companies.

I was intentional with the name Impact Oceans.  People ask “Why Impact Oceans? What’s in the title?”  Back then I knew I wanted to own a company whose purpose was to help people and businesses make a tidal wave, not a splash, in life.  And as one of my mentor’s Debbi Mrazek likes to channel Zig Ziglar “You don’t have to be great to get started, but you do have to get started to be great”.

As quarantine sunk in so did reflecting on the past and the 50%+ ahead.  Over and over I kept thinking about

  • What got you here won’t get you there
  • The definition of insanity
  • The great work I started almost 20 years ago that I have little time for now in sharing with girls and women the endless possibilities in tech, being a leader, and how to get there
  • Not having time to share my unique points of view, perspective, advice
  • Why I am waiting for this magical age of “retirement” to do what I really want to do

July hit – recruiters and headhunters started to call.  I’d get to the top 5 in a sea of 250 for a C-suite role.  Top 2 of another.  But then the CEO of a high growth tech company let me know he did not pick me but instead asked me to consider becoming an Advisor.  Similar requests from other companies were coming in as well.  Along with an influx of individuals asking for career help due to forced transitions or realizing where they are is not where they want to be.

And so I remembered who I am and decided to change my game.

I’m all in now – all in helping advance women in tech and leadership.  All in helping individuals rejuvenate and grow their careers.  All in helping up and coming professional service and customer operation leaders build and transform customer experiences.  All in sharing my unique points of view and perspectives to help others achieve.  I’m ready to make that tidal wave I set out to make over 4 years ago.

As I like to say… in change, and crisis, lies opportunity!  And as Johnny would say… flip the script.  What are you waiting for?
